Substance Information LINK (SILINK) is a program that supports efforts to prevent and reduce the harms associated with
psychoactive substances (alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, and other drugs that affect how people think or feel). Operated by the
Centre for Addictions Research of BC (CARBC), and partially funded by the British Columbia Ministry of Health Services,
Substance Information LINK provides a provincial resource centre for individuals, service providers, and policy makers.

Should I Quit Smoking Now? Produced in partnership with the BC Stop Smoking Program, this brochure helps you test your
readiness to quit smoking, and includes some pointers to increase your chances of success. Available for order from the Centre

On the Road to Quitting is a self-help guide offered by Health Canada and the Ministry of Health, and is available as a
self-help on-line program and a booklet to help you discover why you smoke and build the motivation and self-confidence to
quit smoking. When ready to make a plan, the step-by-step quide highlights the keys to success. Available for order from the

E-Quit is a web-based program developed by Health Canada that will support you through your quitting process by sending you quit-smoking e-mails daily for 8 weeks.

Quit4Life is a web-based program designed to help youth quit smoking and provides a 4-step plan to help you build the skills and confidence to quit smoking. It is also available as a self-help format and as a group program and comes with a facilitator's guide.

Freedom From Smoking is a self-directed program developed by the American Lung Association, consisting of one workbook entitled 'Freedom from Smoking' To order, call 1-800-665-5864.

BC Aboriginal Tobacco Strategy was implemented in 2001 to promote the health and well-being of Aboriginal people
through the blending of best practices and best traditions to stop tobacco misuse. The Aboriginal Tobacco Strategy supports
communities, through annual training and networking opportunities, to provide holistic, community developed, and community
led activities and programs that focus on impacting change within the individual, the family and community. For further

Barb Tarbox Video and Discussion Guide
A video about Barb Tarbox - a courageous 41-year-old mother who lost her battle with lung cancer caused by cigarette smoking - is now available in BC. This video is an excellent companion tool for bc.tobaccofacts. It is strongly recommended that teachers or facilitators preview the material, as the emotional content is very strong. Available in English and French.

Helping Moms Quit is a train-the-trainer program which provides practical and proven effective training for both
professional and lay care providers who work with pregnant or parenting women who smoke. Helping Moms Quit provides a means
of determining a woman's stage of readiness to quit smoking, and identifies strategies appropriate to different stages of
change. The program is available to Regional Health Authorities, Pregnancy Outreach Programs, Canada Pre-Natal Nutrition
Programs, Aboriginal Friendship Centres and Midwifes. To find out more about this program, contact your local health authority.,
Tobacco-Free Sports: Taking the Challenge - One of the most important ways to show leadership in your community is to create tobacco-free policies in your school or sports association. It sends a loud and clear message that tobacco use is not the norm in your community and it will help provide young people with a healthy, smoke-free environment in which to play. Tobacco-free policies help educate everyone including teachers, coaches, referees and parents about the important of being tobacco-free role models. For information on developing tobacco-free policies for your school's sports events, or for your sports association, check out the Tobacco-Free Sports Kit including t-shirts, posters, and a Tobacco-Free Leader's Guide at

Clean Air Coalition of B.C., which is made up of the B.C. Lung Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. & Yukon, seeks to build a greater understanding of the health hazards of second-hand smoke and advocates for smoke-free environments.

www.tobaccofacts.org - created by the Ministry of Health Services, the site provides information and games on tobacco and quitting in an entertaining, and interactive way and allows youth to talk with each other about the dangers of tobacco and the ways they can stay smoke-free.
bc.tobaccofacts K-12 is a set of tobacco prevention resources for Kindergarten to Grade 12 teachers, intended to help keep youth tobacco-free. Each Health Authority in BC has a Regional Tobacco Reduction Coordinator (RTRC) who can provide teachers with a multitude of services and materials to help prevent children from starting to use tobacco. HeartSmart Kids is a curriculum for Kindergarten to Grade 6, offered free of charge by The Heart and Stroke Foundation. Winner of the BC Medical Association's Award of Excellence in Health Promotion in 2004, it contains fun interactive activities that teach children the skills to say no to tobacco, and to make choices to become physically active and eat healthy. British Columbia Tobacco control Strategy: Targeting Our Efforts is a new strategy implemented by the Ministry of Health to work toward a Tobacco Free BC, by stopping youth from starting to smoke; helping people to quit or reduce; and protecting British Columbians from exposure to second-hand smoke.
